COVID-19 resurgence in Asia:
Key updates from Thailand and Vietnam (May 2025)

As COVID-19 cases begin to rise again across parts of Asia, health authorities in Thailand and Vietnam are stepping up efforts to monitor, contain, and communicate the risks posed by new subvariants.

Key highlights from the Asia surge:

Thailand saw 53,676 cases and 16 deaths from January 1 to May 10, 2025. Bangkok reported a peak of 14,349 cases in the week of April 27–May 3, driven by the XBB.1.16 subvariant  
WHO emphasizes continuing preventive measures—masking, hygiene, and vaccination—to mitigate resurgences  

Vietnam May 2025 update recap: 

148 cases across 27 provinces, no fatalities; average ~20 mild cases weekly  
Notable variant NB.1.8.1 detected in the HCMC region, but no increase in severity  
Ministry of Health maintains readiness: hospital isolation zones, equipment stockpiles, hygiene enforcement  
The public is advised to mask up in crowded places, wash hands regularly, avoid gatherings, and monitor symptoms
